Hiab Netherlands displays the latest electric load handling solutions.
The number of electric trucks is rapidly increasing in Europe and in turn, they are used to power Hiab equipment, quietly and free of carbon emissions, making these installations part of Hiab’s eco portfolio.
On display in the Netherlands at ReiningsDemoDagen 7–8 June were the latest Hiab installations on electric trucks aimed at the waste & recycling industry.
The four trucks with equipment on display were

HIAB X-HIPRO 122 loader crane and tipper on Volvo electric truck, Volvo ePTO

However, Hiab was not the only exhibitor to display Hiab equipment on electric and hybrid trucks. Scania showed an electric P25 truck equipped with a HIAB S-HIPRO 230W loader crane, specialised for collecting underground bins, while Mercedes displayed an eActro 300 L 6x2 anelectric with a MULTILIFT Ultima 21S 59 FLEX hooklift.
“There’s a great interest in electric load handling solutions from our customers, and not only from the waste & recycling segment,” says Bert Rodermond, Sales & Marketing Manager, Hiab Netherlands. He continues: “Many customers are future-proofing their businesses as Amsterdam and other Dutch cities will become zero emission zones from 2025. However, already now customers with electric installations are also benefitting from silent operations and lower operating costs to their businesses.”

Hiab Austria GmbH is expanding its presence in the Vienna metropolitan area with a new location in Oeynhausen, south of Vienna, set to open in early 2025.

On November 11 and 12, The 2023 Forestry and Environmental Machinery Exhibition and Demonstration took place in Hitachinaka City.
Hitachinaka City is in the Ibaraki Prefecture, located 150 km north of Tokyo. The event drew a crowd of 25,400 visitors over the two days.
At the Hiab stand four forestry trucks were prominently featured. Notably, the LOGLIFT F150Z, installed on a full trailer Scania truck, stood out. It is a large forestry crane with hydraulic pilot control not yet been introduced in Japan. This unique feature captured the interest of many attendees.
Another highlight was the LOGLIFT F125ZT HiVision, also mounted on a Scania. The upgraded and clearer camera images in version 2.0 drew the attention of numerous visitors, resulting in a line for those eager to experience the 3D headset. The third showcased vehicle was a container truck equipped with the MULTILIFT ULTIMA U26S-70 hooklift. This versatile construction can efficiently transport large volumes of wood chips and logs, catering to the growing demand for biomass power plants in recent years. The last truck at the booth had both a LOGLIFT F82Z and a MULTILIFT ULTIMA U21S-61 installed. It offers multifunctional capabilities such as loading and unloading logs and transporting wood chips.
"The ongoing shortage of truck drivers and young workers poses a challenge in Japan. Vehicles capable of transporting large volumes and serving multiple purposes, as we displayed, are therefore poised to remain a focal point in the future. The appeal of safe and advanced cranes, exemplified by HiVision, is expected to resonate with the younger demographic entering the forestry workforce. We aspire to be a steadfast partner, consistently offering solutions to address the diverse challenges faced by our customers," said Toshiya Suzuki, Director of Hiab Business Japan.

A leading UK pet care business has gone electric with the addition of The MOFFETT eSeries NX has been selected to boost the distribution fleet of the UK’s leading pet care business, Pets at Home.
The MOFFETT eSeries NX is the perfect distribution partner, offering improved navigation through 4-way steering and high lifting capacity; all whilst being entirely emission-free.

Steve Travis, Transport Manager at Pets at Home, explained: “Hiab supported us with the introduction of the new equipment, and we’re delighted to now be at a point where the vast majority of our drivers prefer the electric versions.”
Hiab worked closely with Pets at Home to come up with a solution that would benefit both their distribution system and workforce.
Steve added: “Hiab worked with us to overcome any concerns or issues, supporting our distribution team at every step, including talking to drivers, trainers, and management to always find the best solution that works for us.

Leading hard landscaping, building and roofing products supplier, Marshalls plc, worked closely with Hiab’s technical team to create an innovative and award-winning solution to an industry problem.
After experiencing two incidents involving cranes within their own yard, Marshalls approached Hiab to explore innovative solutions aimed at minimising the potential for human error in similar situations.
The result is an ignition key interlock that has earned national recognition. The key prevents vehicles from being manoeuvred until a crane is correctly stowed.
By the end of next year, Marshalls’ entire fleet of vehicles will be fitted with the Hiab key, which won the Safer Transport & Logistics Award at the MPA Health & Safety Awards.
Gary Lawson, Central Logistics Operations Manager at Marshalls, said: “We worked closely with Hiab’s UK technical team on this project, since it relies on the crane’s sensors to recognise the jib is in the transit position, permanently attaching the crane key to the tractor’s ignition key was a simple but very effective solution.
“We have fitted it to 60 artic vehicles so far and the roll-out means all of them will have this new safety feature by the end of next year.”
The logistics department for Marshalls runs a fleet of approximately 200 HGV vehicles, split between artic cranes and drawbars, delivering mainly to building sites, merchant’s yards or to the general public.
Unlike other truck-mounted cranes that are fully integrated into the cab, there are some artic trailers which have cranes independent to the tractor unit. Wiring the crane into the cab is not possible meaning over-height warnings are removed.
Hiab UK’s technical team of Darren Lloyd and Peter Evans worked in partnership with the logistics team at Marshalls to devise the ignition key interlock which is attached to the truck’s ignition key.
Now the driver must remove the key from a vehicle to start the crane and the same in reverse. The driver must ensure the crane is safely stowed on the trailer otherwise the key can’t be removed from the key barrel.
The solution has eliminated risk of crane incidents due to human error and provided a safer environment for all on site.
Darren Lloyd, After Sales Technical Support Team Leader at Hiab, added: “The interlocking engine key is the ideal solution for removing human error as drivers cannot override the system. The vehicle cannot be moved until the crane is correctly stowed. This system could be used throughout the industry by any operator using the same crane fleet and fitted it is very time effective, taking just four hours to be installed. We look forward to working with other companies who are looking for bespoke solutions to their own safety issues.”
